  • Eliminate fruit flies from your house without the use of pesticides

If you’re like me, you’d rather have insects in your house than spray neurotoxins in it.  People who have kids especially should avoid the use of chemical pesticides.

Fruit flies are annoying though, and you don’t have to live with them.  Here’s a very effective and non-toxic way to trap them:
Take a 4″ high wide mouth glass jar (like from salsa) and put about 1/2 inch of the following mixture in the bottom of it:

1 tbsp sliced or mashed raisins
    1 tsp baker’s yeast
    1 tsp cider vinegar
    1 tsp water
1 tiny dab of dish soap (to reduce surface tension of the liquid so fruit flies get trapped and drown)

mix these things up in the bottom of the jar.

create a paper cone and tape completely along the seam.

put a rim of tape around the outside edge of the jar (sticky side inward), so half of the sticky part is on the rim of the jar, and the other half is sticking up over the rim of the jar

cut the tip off the cone to make a dime-sized opening

cut the top so that the funnel just sits down in the rim of the jar

fold the tape over the edge of the paper to seal the edge of the funnel to the rim of the jar

be sure not to get the paper wet or the fruit flies may not go all the way into the trap.

make several of these if needed and place them in the kitchen and near house plants.

clean all rotten fruit and wipe counters.  it may also be necessary to pour a bit of bleach down your sink drains and let it sit for an hour or so, because they can lay eggs in the drains

This is a totally non-toxic way to eliminate a fruit fly infestation,. Make as many of these traps as you think is necessary to cover your whole house.  2 of these traps managed to trap hundreds of fruit flies in my 3 bedroom, 3-story house and within a week they were all gone.
