qbit wrote: "Are all these hoaxes as well?"

This one certainly is.
“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” --- falsely attributed to Thomas Jefferson.

The above quote doesn't appear in any of TJ's works or speeches. No one who goes around claiming that TJ ever said or wrote such words can provide one scintilla of evidence for the claim.

And then there's this quote by John Adams:
“Arms in the hands of citizens (may) be used at individual discretion…in private self-defense…”

If you read the entire passage, you will see that the above snippet was so wrenched from context that it is worthless and misleading. Standing alone, yes, it is also a bogus quote.

Proven:

http://www.teachingamericanhistory.org/library/index.asp?document=324

Find it, if you will...and you can check all his speeches, if you want. You won't find it there, either.

He does mention requests to spend money on "shovel ready" projects (post offices and post roads), science, literature, diplomatic missions, and supplies.

If he gave that speech today, half of Congress (the ones with "R" next to their name) would have sat on their hands...and maybe someone would have even shouted "You Lie!" at George.

This quote has been proven to be a hoax - Washington never said it. It may sound good to NRA members, but it isn't true.
